Hi, I am working with Carbon Plumage and I have some trouble juggling the parameters for fatness; in order to reduce jittering for both hard and soft feathers. I'd believe the first parameters to adjust is collision thickness (fatness), however I'm unsure if anything else, other than higher damp, should be adjusted to prevent these oscillations. Self collisions were disabled to troubleshoot this so the issue may lie directly in the skin fatness and individual feather fatness relationship. Please can you help point me in the right direction. Many thanks, Jane

Hi Jane,

Talked with the dev team and here are their thoughts -
Here are the most likely causes for jittering:

1) Root offset not set properly
If it is too small, the feathers are spawned inside the collider, which leads to jittering

2) Feathers are spawned in a self-intersecting manner
This does not seem to be the case because disabling self-collision did not solve the issue.

3) Feather attachment is too strong and fights collision
I would always allow for some Welding Radius.
My suggestion is to initially have a rather large Welding Radius and adjust the Welding Stiffness to prevent jiggling.

I hope this helps.
If it does not, we would need more information, or, if possible, a reproducible hip file.

Hi, thank you for your assistance. I was able to revisit our setup with this information yesterday and fortunately it seemed to be mainly a welding radius issue. However it's also great to know even a root offset value could add to jitter.
We also experimented using the feathers provided in the plumage tutorial and comparing that with our feathers helped us understand the impact the feather topology has on the overall stiffness and bend structure of the feather.
Thank you,
-Jane
