Hi I am a CFX artist at a studio producing a full length animated cartoon and we are evaluating your solver to see if it meets are needs. I have a few questions, I'll post them in separate threads

First one - can I set the path to save the cache for each individual cloth?

Txs,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Our Carbon cache is a special simulation cache intended to allow for restart, replay and scrubbing. If you need to save the geometry of a simulated cloth, please use Maya Geometry Caches for the output meshes.

Thanks,
Mike

It would still be convenient if you could work separately with caches for each cloth. For example, I did the whole simulation and at the end I didn’t like something, I delete part of the cache, change the parameters and start the simulation from that place where I deleted the cache.

Yes we plan to allow sim restart, for all objects in a simulation, from any frame and it will be deterministic - ie. if you sim 100 frames then restart at frame 50 with no parameter changes (but force a resim rather than play from cache), you will get exactly the same result at frame 100. That's the beauty of having a simulation cache rather than a geometry cache. If you were restarting the sim just with cached geometry, you would not get the same result. Right now there is a bug in restarting the simulation from any frame, so its disabled in the beta. Hopefully we'll get a chance to fix it soon.

It's an interesting question as to how much artists would use a simulation cache per cloth. Because if cloths are interacting with other objects then you really need to sim all objects and if they are not interacting or you are ok with one being a collider for the other, then you can use a maya geometry cached cloth as a collider or cascade Carbon simulations.

Right now you can get a simulation cache per cloth by cascading simulations - so this example simulates the skirt in the first sim and then uses that as a collider in the second sim where it simulates the tank top. If you change the tank top settings it will just replay the skirt from the simulation cache. Here is the example in the docs - https://carbon0222m.numerion-software.com/downloads.html scroll down near the bottom to Avatar Layered Multi Simulation.

If you have use cases that cannot be supported by either whole sim restart from any frame, or by cascading sims or using cached cloths as colliders via the maya geometry cache, then please let us know and we will look to expand the Carbon simulation cache functionality to support them. Txs.

You can also work with Maya Geo Caches per cloth.
Here's a short (1:17) introductory video to Carbon and Maya Geo Caching.
